Anyone who's been tinkering with ROMs for a while knows that few options have endured as long as LineageOS. In its newest iteration, the project gives the community another boost: LineageOS 23.0 brings Android 16 to more than a hundred models, from older phones to recent devices that still have a long lifespan.
In a scenario where Google has modified the pace and methods of publishing its code, the team has opted to move forward with what is available. This translates into a solid and usable build right now, with which Many devices can be updated to Android 16 regardless of the manufacturer.
This is LineageOS 23.0 and how it differs
The chosen base is the first stable version of Android 16 published in June, not the QPR1 branch, since Google has not yet released the source code for Android 16 QPR1.That's why you'll see the bump to 23.0 and not 23.1: the project prioritizes delivering a stable version rather than waiting indefinitely.
Security times are also changing. With Google's new risk-based bulletin model, The most important corrections come in cycles, often quarterly, so the project adjusts its schedule to that flow to integrate critical patches as soon as they become available.
As for Pixel devices, they lose the preferential treatment they had in the past: They are still supported, but with less specific information published by Google. (e.g. kernels in compressed packages with no history), which requires more caution.
The lack of QPR1 integration means minor absences compared to the more complete Android 16: you won't see Material 3 Expressive or Desktop mode from the start. However, they are there edge-to-edge, predictive back navigation, better app adaptation and support for the Advanced Protection mode, among other system changes.
First-party apps are also growing. The Aperture camera gets a major boost with Ultra HDR and RAW capture, and the system can run in virtual environments: virtual machine support (QEMU) opens the door to more devices based on the mainline Linux kernel in the medium term.
There are interface and app tweaks: the notification island adopts dynamic colors and clearer indicators; Twelve (the music player) Adds one-tap shuffle and a more comprehensive “Now Playing” view; backup (Seedvault), calendar (Etar), WebView, and upload control have been revamped; and Catapult, a launcher for Android TV content without annoying add-ons, has appeared.
- Based on Android 16 stable: Navigation, privacy, and app compatibility improvements.
- Aperture: Ultra HDR support, RAW support, and general camera app polish.
- Twelve: : new “Now Playing” screen, statistics and instant shuffle.
- Virtualization: running on virtual machines (QEMU) for testing and development.
- Other improvements: Notification island, new ringtones and charging settings.

Compatibility, installation and availability
Before flashing, check out the official project wiki: There are models that require bootloader unlocking, specific base firmware, or additional steps.. Making a full backup is highly recommended, especially if you're changing encryption or partitions.
Builds are available on the LineageOS download portal and are updated regularly. If you're coming from another ROM, A clean wipe (factory reset) is usually necessary To avoid conflicts, if you're already using LineageOS, OTAs simplify the upgrade when your device supports it.
The project recalls that, due to the new Android security scheme, Patch packages may arrive bundled And not necessarily every month. Even so, the priority remains to integrate the most impactful fixes as soon as possible.
LineageOS keeps the pulse of the alternative Android ecosystem: brings Android 16 to more than a hundred devices, incorporates useful improvements to system apps and adjusts its strategy to Google's changes without losing compatibility with the most popular models, including Pixel, Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, Sony, and Xiaomi.
