Android POS in stores

Android-based point-of-sale (POS) systems are becoming increasingly prevalent in in-person payments in Spain. Among the institutions that have most rapidly accelerated this transition is BBVA, which already operates with 52% of its terminals running on Android and accounts for over 80% of new purchases of this type of device, promoting a more flexible and connected way of collecting payments.

In addition to cards and contactless payments, these terminals accept mobile payments, Bizum, QR codes (Alipay and WeChat Pay), and payment links like Paygold . They incorporate advanced features such as DCC (currency conversion), Plazox, split payments and tips , a digital receipt viewable in My Business, and the installation of specific apps. All of this comes with more stable operation, requiring 20% fewer technical interventions compared to other terminals.

Deployment and use: from classic POS to mobile with Tap on Phone

The ecosystem is evolving from traditional card readers to smartphone-based POS systems , thanks to the Tap on Phone solution integrated into the BBVA Cobros app. All you need is an Android device running version 11 or higher and activation via a POS contract to start accepting payments without additional hardware—a particularly convenient option for freelancers and mobile businesses.

The usage data speaks for itself: in June 2025, the number of businesses using this solution grew by 39% year-on-year , cumulative revenue in the first half of the year was 4,7 times higher than the previous year, and transactions increased by 379% . Businesses actively using mobile POS systems also rose, with an 80% year-on-year increase , and those accepting payments via smartphone transact on average three times more than those still using traditional card readers.

Bizum enters the physical counter

The big news is the direct integration of Bizum into Android POS terminals . BBVA took the first step in Spain by enabling payments directly from the terminal, and more recently, CaixaBank, Santander, and Grupo Caja Rural have joined in. The process is simple: the merchant enters the customer's mobile number into the POS terminal, the customer receives a notification from their bank, and authorizes the payment in seconds.

For SMEs and local businesses, even in areas with a strong local presence like Mallorca , this translates into faster payments and less reliance on cash , without investing in extra equipment. Currently, availability is limited to Android-based POS systems, and transaction fees may apply depending on the provider, but the trend points to increasingly widespread adoption.

Operational and business advantages of Android POS

These terminals drive the digitization of the point of sale with electronic receipts in My Business, apps for management tasks, and advanced features such as foreign currency payments, installment plans with Plazox, bill splitting, and tips . It's a more versatile approach that aligns with increasingly digital payment habits.

There is also a link to financial solutions : the revenue generated from the POS terminal can facilitate access to immediate digital financing through the Online POS Loan (subject to approval) . According to BBVA's Acquiring Solutions management in Spain, the Android update aims to improve management and reduce incidents , thus reinforcing reliability at the point of sale.
